Coaching within the confines of a business environment is something that is growing in popularity however mentoring has been a part of business since its inception. The easiest way to distinguish between coaching and mentoring is as follows;


Coaching is a method of directing, instructing and training a person or group of people, with the aim to achieve some goal or develop specific skills Mentoring refers to a personal developmental relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. To put these in perspective, . Although preferred, the coach does not necessarily have extensive experience in the skill whereas a mentor is someone who has the specific skill


Whether that means appointing veteran team members to mentor younger employees or bringing in an external coach — the benefits can be great.


First, a coaching relationship can be much more informal than a mentoring program or a traditional employee training program. A coach can work directly with someone in a 1-on-1 environment to address their concerns, challenges and even fears, a mentor can assist the employee with learning the skills and the tricks of the trade that they themselves have leveraged during their career whereas training programs are largely a one-size-fits-all approach. For the  average employee It can be very helpful to have someone to turn to when questions arise on the job and a mentor fits that role perfectly however if an employee needs perspective on a situation a coach would fit that role perfectly.


Secondly, instituting some sort of coaching & mentoring program for your staff is a great way to increase the human capital of your business. The whole point of coaching & mentoring is to educate and help people grow within their positions at your company but also as human beings in general. Coaching allows people to improve themselves and therefore, improve the skills and qualities they bring to the workplace. Your business is only as good as the people you have working at it and one of the best ways to upgrade the level of people working for you is to invest in them with some sort of coaching & Mentoring program.


Investing in your staff through coaching & mentoring is also a great way to increase self-efficacy on the job. Coaching & mentoring is a very reciprocal relationship that is only successful when the coach/mentor and client both bring something to the situation. Therefore, people who go through coaching often feel like they have more control over the events of their life and what they can do to improve their situations at work and elsewhere.


Also, investing in your staff through these programs can show your staff that you’re interested in their development as human beings and not only workers. Coaching is usually a very holistic approach to development in a way that training programs and professional development sometimes aren’t.


Finally, ensure that your team has input on any coaching topics, events and strategies. Traditionally many business owners focus on motivation type coaching however this is only sustainable in certain individuals. If your employees are not self-motivated to be in your business then it poses a question on the validity of their employment. Although this is a tough reality, understanding your employees needs prior to you investing in a coaching and mentoring program for them , will give you a better understanding and perspective to ensure that the investment will be worthwhile.
